5 of Your Favorite Junk Foods Made Healthy!

Updated on April 4, 2012

There are few things that unite us a as people worldwide. One is the desire for better living conditions for everyone, another is the need for peace and unity among all and lastly the need for super-yummy food that won't turn us into sumo wrestlers. (My apologies to my Sumo friends - you guys are gorgeous and you know it. It's just not for everyone.) That's why I've done a round up of 5 of my personal favorite comforting junk foods and their healthy made over counterparts. All links to the recipes are found under the pics. Bon Appetit!

1. Healthy Tater Tots

Again, I put my favorite pick at the top of my list! Who doesn't love tater tots? But those tasty treats are really bad for you. I mean, they are basically tiny grease bombs set to detonate in your arteries. That's why I absolutely went wild with joy when I came across this recipe on PenniesOnAPlatter's blog. She came up with a way to get the perfect mixed of soft potato-y goodness on the inside of the tot with a crispy outside WITHOUT deep-frying them! Life is good again!

2. Yummy Ice Candy

Santos over at scentofgreenbananas.com shows us how to make gorgeous looking and super tasty freezies (at least that's what we call them in Canada). This is how they do it in the tropics of Guam and who are we to argue? The result is cold, delicious and healthy Popsicle-like treats for the whole family. What screams Susie Homemaker than giving your family the ultimate treat without all of the dyes and preservatives found in the ones you buy in the store? Nothing. Nothing at all.

3. Healthy Pizza Pockets

Okay. Full Disclosure. I am head over heals in love with Pizza Pockets. I mean, what's not to love? They've got the cheese and the meat and the weird pastry and the enormous high fat content. I never buy them anymore because I'm sure that they will be the death of me. I have no willpower when it comes to Pizza Pockets. So that's why I'm so thankful to Real Mom Kitchens for coming up with this recipe for Grilled Pizza Pockets. Don't they look fabulous? And much healthier than the type I'm trying to avoid at the grocery store. Check it out!

4. Healthy French Fries

Is there anything more iconic to fast food than the french fry? I don't think so. But again, they are usually so high in fat, and even though that doesn't stop me from loving and eating them, it's great to know that there is a tried, tested and proven way to make our fries without all of the fat. Both myself and my thighs send a thanks out to Curvy Girl Guide for her Guilt Free Fries. You won't be disappointed.

5. Yummy Low-Fat Mac and Cheese

Last but certainly not least is a nationwide favorite - Macaroni and Cheese. The very essence of comfort food, mom and thunder thighs. But not anymore! Over at whiteonricecouple.com they have come up with a recipe that duplicated the delicious taste of mac and cheese without the devilish calorie count that usually comes with it. Thank goodness for healthy chefs!

So get out there cooking! Try out these fabulous recipes that will literally help you breathe easier. The fight against fat is on! So grab your knives and your spatulas and start cooking and, more importantly, eating healthier and tastier!
